Chapter 6

Nancy sighed heavily as she and Millie made their way back to the main deck of The Liberty Voyager. The weight of their recent encounters with the Winthrops and Thompsons hung in the air between them.

"Well, that's that," Nancy said, her voice tinged with a mixture of relief and resignation. "I've done my job, interviewed the key people. It's time to report my findings to Officer Daniels and bow out of this mystery."

Millie's face fell, her enthusiasm deflating like a punctured balloon. "But Nancy, we've barely scratched the surface! There's so much more to uncover."

Nancy shook her head, the lines around her eyes deepening. "Millie, dear, I'm not interested in pursuing this any further. The thrill of mystery-solving isn't what it used to be for me."

"But aren't you even a little curious about how The Great Zoltar died?" Millie pressed, her eyes wide with excitement.

Nancy paused, considering for a moment. "To be honest, Millie, I'm more curious about how his body ended up in the storage area. Was it the work of just one person, or were there multiple people involved?"

Millie's jaw dropped, her eyes lighting up with realization. "Oh my gosh, Nancy! That's a brilliant question! I hadn't even thought of that."

Despite herself, Nancy felt a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Yes, it is an interesting angle. But," she added quickly, seeing Millie's hopeful expression, "I'm still not interested in pursuing it. My investigating days are behind me."

Millie's shoulders slumped, but a mischievous glint appeared in her eye. "Well, if you're not interested, I guess I'll just have to check out the stage myself. You know, see if there's any connection, figure out how the body could have been moved..."

She started walking away, her steps slow and deliberate. Nancy watched her go, conflict written across her face. After a few moments, she threw her hands up in exasperation.

"Oh, for heaven's sake," Nancy muttered under her breath. Then, louder, "Millie, wait! I'm coming with you."

Millie spun around, her face split by a triumphant grin. She pumped her fist in the air. "Yes! I knew you couldn't resist!"

As they made their way towards the stage, Nancy couldn't help but chuckle at Millie's enthusiasm. "You know, when I was your age, I used to be just as excited about mysteries. Now look at me, being dragged into one at my age."

Millie linked her arm through Nancy's. "Age is just a number, Nancy. Your mind is as sharp as ever."

Nancy and Millie stood on the spot where The Great Zoltar had performed his final magical act. The stage, now devoid of its former grandeur, felt eerie and hollow. Nancy's mind buzzed with questions as she examined the space, trying to piece together the events of that fateful night.

“I’ve called Lisa to join us here,” Nancy said, glancing at Millie. “We need to understand how this trick was supposed to work.”

Millie nodded, her eyes wide with curiosity. “You really think Lisa knows something useful?”

“Lisa worked closely with Zoltar,” Nancy replied.
